Short spell of rain brings relief to heat-stricken Vellore

Arcot receives 27.4 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours

Several areas in Vellore district received rain in short spells on Tuesday. Vellore town received sharp showers in the evening causing hardship to office goers. The rains were a welcome relief from the sweltering heat. The average day temperature was between 40 and 43.5 degree Celsius.

Arcot region received heavy rains for more than an hour on Tuesday, which washed away the mud and silt on the roads. According to the Meterological Centre, Arcot received 27.4 mm of rainfall till the last 24 hours ending at 8 a.m. on Tuesday. Kaveripakkam recorded 5.8mm, Ponnai and Vaniyambadi recorded 12mm each and Alangayam received 2.2 mm. However, the day temperature rose to 41.20 degree Celsius on Wednesday and the minimum day temperature was 27.10 degree Celsius.

Vellore town was in the grip of dry spells on Wednesday afternoon, but the evening became cooler with the winds playing a major part in the change of weather.

In the neighbouring Kancheepuram district, heavy rains were reported in Kancheepuram town, Sevilimedu, Walajabad and Balu Chetty Chatram. Rainwater stagnation was seen on the roads in Kancheepuram town for some time on Tuesday. According to activists, bigger tanks like Rangaswamy Kulam, Ashtabuja Kulam and Singa Perumal Koil Kulam were yet to benefit from the rains as most of the rainwater channels were blocked due to dumping of wastes in many places.
