BJP leader and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will formally kick-start the National Democratic Alliance’s Lok Sabha election campaign in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, in the presence of leaders of all alliance partners in Chennai.

Ahead of the public rally, Mr. Modi, who has been making frequent visits to the State — the previous one being on Friday last — will launch projects worth ₹5,010 crore at an official event.

‘Mega rally’

The projects include the unveiling of a statue of former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran, a plaque for an LNG terminal at Ennore, inauguration of two road projects, laying of foundation stone for four National Highways projects and dedication of the electrification of the Erode-Karur-Tiruchi and Salem-Karur-Dindigul railway section.

The public meeting, dubbed a ‘mega rally’ by State BJP leaders, will see AIADMK co-coordinator and Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, party coordinator and Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, PMK leaders S. Ramadoss and Anbumani Ramadoss, Puthiya Tamilagam founder-president K. Krishnasamy and A.C. Shanmugam of the New Justice Party sharing the stage with the Prime Minister.

Leaders of other potential allies too are expected to be on the dais.

Ever since the BJP and the AIADMK began seat-sharing talks for the Lok Sabha polls, the Prime Minister and some of his Cabinet Ministers have been making trips to Tamil Nadu to launch various central projects as the national party is keen on winning enough seats from the south.

Sources in the BJP said Mr. Modi was keen on laying the foundation for various projects in Tamil Nadu before the Election Commission’s model code of conduct kicks in when it issues the notification for the Lok Sabha election.
