Footballer dies during match in Bangalore
22 March 2012

Tragedy occurred at the Bangalore Football Stadium as D Venkatesh (23), a player for Bangalore Mars, collapsed and died while playing in the Bangalore District Football Association ‘A’ Division match against South Western Railways.

Venkatesh came in as a substitute 15 minutes before the final hooter. Just about three minutes after he had entered the field, he collapsed. His team was leading 2-0 at that time. There was no ambulance - only a physiotherapist was present at the ground and the association officials tried to revive him for ten minutes before he was eventually shifted to Hosmat hospital in a private vehicle.

Dr Ajit Benedict Royan of Hosmat, said: “He was brought dead at around 3.40pm. The post-mortem will be conducted and we can then determine the cause of death.” Police have registered an unnatural death report.

A match that followed the ‘A’ division tie, was played for about 37 minutes when angry spectators started throwing chairs on to the ground claiming that medical facilities were not enough.
