Ranji: Mumbai should have it easy vs Saurashtra
05 December 2011

Controversies notwithstanding, Mumbai have been irresistible this season. With two outright wins with bonus points, the 39-time champions would look to continue their fine form when they take on Saurashtra in their fifth round Ranji Trophy Elite division group A tie that begins in Rajkot on Tuesday.

The Wasim Jaffer’s side has been a force to reckon with this season, despite going through a transition phase. They would look to stamp their authority against Jaydev Shah-led outfit.

Fast bowler Ajit Agarkar’s controversial return from Cuttack has not had any effect on their performances. In fact, Mumbai convincingly defeated Orissa in their last match. The skipper would be expecting his players to perform in the same manner.

Mumbai’s season has been full of positives. The biggest gain has been the arrival of new talent in Suryakumar Yadav. His performances has been the talk of the town. The youngster, who would lose his nerves after reaching 80s, showed signs of maturity in the last game. His 200-run knock propelled Mumbai to a huge score that allowed the bowlers to bundle Orissa out twice and register an innings win.

The only concern has been Jaffer’s form. The skipper is yet to register a half-century in four games and averages 26.00. Ironically, it is in contrast to his last two years’ performances when he was scoring in bulk. This will be the right opportunity for Jaffer to get back in form.

In the bowling department, Zaheer Khan’s presence is a boost for the side. After his return to match fitness and form in Cuttack, he would look to continue in the same manner before the Australia series.

For Saurashtra, it will be a huge task.Middle-order batsman Cheteshwar Pujara’s return to competitive cricket was uneventful. He made nine in the first innings followed by 52 in the seconds against Karnataka in the last match. He would be looking to get into the groove quickly to return to the top flight cricket.
