England qualifies for Euro 2012 despite Rooney red card
07 October 2011

England booked their place in next summer’s Euro 2012 finals with a 2-2 draw in Montenegro on Friday, but the result was overshadowed by the sending off of Wayne Rooney late in the second-half.

Andrija Delibasic headed a 90th-minute equaliser for Montenegro, who played the last 20 minutes with an extra man after Rooney saw red for kicking out at Miodrag Dzudovic.

England just about hung on for the point to clinch top spot in group G, while with Switzerland losing in Wales, Montenegro also secured second spot and a play-offs berth.

Goals from Ashley Young and Darren Bent had put England firmly in control but with the last kick of the first-half Elsad Zverotic pulled one back with a deflected strike from just outside the box.

England then lost their way in the second-half and Rooney was sent off on 73 minutes when, having lost the ball, he kicked through the back of Dzudovic to get himself sent off.

That made Rooney the second England player to be send off twice — joining David Beckham — and he will now miss at least the first match in next summer’s finals.

With the extra man, Montenegro piled on the pressure and Joe Hart had to save well from Milorad Pekovic but Delibasic then popped up with a header to secure a draw and a play-off spot.
