French Open: Defending champion Schiavone through to second round
22 May 2011

Defending champion Francesca Schiavone bounced back to her winning ways at the French Open, beating Melanie Oudin of the United States 6-2, 6-0 on Monday in the first round.

Schiavone, who last year became the first Italian woman to win a Grand Slam singles title, won four straight games in the first set after being broken early by her 19-year-old American opponent. Schiavone then won seven straight games to reach the second round.

Later, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer were both scheduled to be on court. Djokovic, who is 37-0 in 2011, will face Thiemo de Bakker of the Netherlands, while 2009 champion Federer is scheduled to play Feliciano Lopez of Spain.
